LCSD1 Elementary Behavior Family Guide

At LCSD1, we believe every child deserves a safe, respectful, and caring learning environment. This guide helps families understand how we support positive behavior and respond when challenges arise. Our goal is to help students learn from their mistakes, rebuild relationships, and return to learning successfully.

Tier 1: Everyday Expectations and Learning from Mistakes

Tier 1 behaviors are everyday classroom concerns that happen from time to time—such as talking out of turn, not following directions, being tardy, or using inappropriate language. These are opportunities for reteaching and reflection, not punishment. Teachers handle these in class and work directly with students to help them get back on track.

What Families Can Expect:

  • Teachers address behavior quickly and calmly in the classroom.

  • Students may receive a reminder, a reteach of expectations, or a short reflection activity.

  • A cartoon of a person thinkingAI-generated content may be incorrect.Families may be contacted to keep communication open and supportive.

Possible Supports and Consequences:

  • Reflection sheet or writing activity

  • Apology letter or verbal apology

  • Goal-setting conference or check-in with a mentor

  • Classroom restitution task or community contribution

  • Positive contribution or peer mediation

Re-Entry and Support:

When a Tier 1 issue occurs, our focus is helping students reflect, learn, and move forward. Re-entry might include a conversation with a trusted adult, writing a plan for improvement, or completing a small project that contributes positively to the classroom community.

Tier 2: When Behavior Disrupts Learning

Tier 2 behaviors are more serious or repeated actions that disrupt learning for the student or others. Examples include ongoing defiance, technology misuse, conflicts between peers, or repeated disruptions. These behaviors usually involve an administrator and additional support plans.

What Families Can Expect:

  • School staff will contact families to collaborate on next steps.

  • A short-term plan will be developed to help students make better choices.

  • Restorative or reflective activities will be included to help rebuild trust.

  • Reflection and action plan

  • Parent-student-administrator meeting

  • Community or school-based service project

  • Restitution or mediation with affected parties

  • Check-in/check-out system or mentorship program

  • Behavior contract with progress monitoring

Re-Entry and Support:

After a Tier 2 incident, the student may meet with a social worker, a lead teacher, or an administrator to talk about what happened and how to repair harm. The student might complete a reflection, apology, or service task. Our goal is always to help students rebuild relationships and feel successful returning to class.

Tier 3: Serious or Unsafe Behaviors

Tier 3 behaviors are serious safety or law-related issues such as fighting, threats, vandalism, possession of harmful items, or harassment. These behaviors require administrative involvement and may include suspension or further disciplinary action. Even so, our focus remains on safety, accountability, and helping students re-engage with learning.

What Families Can Expect:

  • Immediate notification and involvement from school administrators.

  • A thorough review of the incident following district procedures.

  • Collaboration with families to support safety and behavioral growth.

  • Possible law enforcement contact for incidents involving safety or illegal actions.

  • Restitution or community impact project

  • Formal restorative or reintegration conference

  • Mentoring or behavior monitoring plan

  • Behavior contract and continued mentorship

  • Family engagement meetings and ongoing check-ins

Re-Entry and Support:

Re-entry after a Tier 3 incident involves a structured plan that includes the student, family, and school staff. Supports may include goal-setting and ongoing mentoring to ensure the student is ready to return successfully. We emphasize learning, accountability, and restoring trust within the school community.
